On Tuesday, June 28th, Pete Rock, Tek & Steele (of Smif N Wessun) were celebrating the release of their collaborative album, ‘Monumental.’ It was a peaceful gathering inside of a sold-out Tammany Hall (lower-east side Manhattan, NY) to see the group perform new music from the project. Earlier in the evening some guests wanted to enter the event but were turned away by the management and bouncers employed by the club. A minor argument ensued, but eventually was diffused by the bouncers. Thirty minutes after that minor skirmish 15-20 uniformed Police Officers from the 7th precinct arrived at the venue. Shortly after even more uniformed officers arrived. The officers then hurried into the club and began macing and assaulting individuals inside the club, dragging one of them out and pummeling him directly in front of the club. Present at the event were artists, industry tastemakers, fans, photographers, and cameramen. Several people began filming and recording the unprovoked brutality, much to the dismay of the police. The officers then began to mace and assault anyone within arms length, including several women. Kenneth Montgomery, the group’s attorney, who was in attendance at the event, stated that the Police “behavior was unjustified, unprovoked, and simply barbaric considering there was no provocation.” Pete Rock, Tek and Steele fortunately were not harmed, however some of their friends & family were assaulted by the Police. The group’s attorney, Kenneth Montgomery, is addressing the situation now with local community leaders & is available for comment with more detailed information.///
With an extremely heavy heart I communicate to my friends and colleagues that over 24 hours ago my family and friends went out to celebrate the album release of Monumental. It was a peaceful, fun classic hip hop party. We all left the venue to be greeted outside by a sea of NYPD gloved up and very aggressive. As we began to move we all witnessed the most brutal beating of a party patron. He was on the floor surrounded by 10 police officers with sticks out beating him. In shock, we must have not moved quickly enough to the officers liking and they shouted “Move the FUCK back” and then shoved myself and my daughter down to the ground. Now we were surrounded by 3 cops and 1 pinning us down. My daughter shouted “Get off my mother” and was handcuffed and arrested. I am sure you heard or saw the disturbing graphic videos that have been circulating on line. Tonight with a lump in my throat my daughter remains in police custody with 4 others. She has been charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. With gratitude I have received emails, texts, msgs and phone calls sending support and asking what they can do. Tonight I ask if you can to join us peacefully tomorrow morning 9am at 100 Centre St New York, NY to stand up with us to this injustice. I’m sure everybody within earshot has already read the news about Slaughterhouse – the crew of lyrical castaways – and Alabama’s quick-tongued Caucasoid rapper Yelawolf aligning with Shady/Interscope Records the other day. Some folks are lauding the Jimmy Iovine-reared mega-label for giving a well-deserved to a class of emcees long overdue for a chance at the major label spotlight, while some are predicting a changing of the guard in rap; a return to the days when abstract lyricism was placed ahead of elementary bleeps, rhymes and lies. The real question, however, is whether or not the house Curtis currently terrorizes can actually turn these five artists into legitimate (read: money making) machines.
The most glaring obstacle for Shady is how the label can somehow trick today’s Internets-addled, ADHD generation into paying enough attention to Crooked I, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Royce Da 5’9” and Yelawolf to convince them to buy an album from a bunch of artists who are a lot closer to 40 than they are 20 (or, in rap layman’s terms, over the hill) which would, ideally, emphasize more on dense verbal exercises than simplistic call-and-response chants. Not necessarily the best idea financially in today’s rap contingent, especially since the so-called hip hop purist contingent who have longed for this type of music to once again take center stage also treat the very thought of spending money to actually buy an album as if it were the drunk, loud and ugly woman at a party.
It also doesn’t help that the members of Slaughterhouse were all at one point rapsters signed to major labels who, thanks to various unfortunate circumstances, were unable to take advantage of their opportunities and were thus spurned by the mainstream demographic, eventually finding solace in the neo-underground (read: Internets) world of rap where, despite gaining a huge following and an equally heavy buzz, their self-titled debut album only moving a paltry 31,000 units. But nevermind that.
Yelawolf fares a bit better, however, simply off the strength that, to this day, the public is still fascinated by the idea of a White rapper that can actually rap, despite it being over 20 years since Vanilla Ice was (allegedly) hung out a window by Suge Knight and over a decade since Eminem (who’s now, ironically, Yelawolf’s boss) broke the mold. Despite his rapping ability (and he can actually rap, mind you), Yela was wrongfully labeled as a countrified Slim Shady (or a skinny Bubba Sparxxx, take your pick) as soon as he stepped out of the womb and into rap’s public consciousness. Now that’s he’s actually allied himself with Marshall, those ass-backward comparisons will never stop.
So here we are again with Dr. Dre’s camp scooping up some highly talented artists all at the same time. While parts of me hopes they actually do something while they’re there, the cynic suggests that I’ll be waiting for a Slaughterhouse or Yelawolf album for about as long as I’d waited for albums from Rakim, Truth Hurts, Eve, Busta Rhymes, The Firm, Hittman, King T, Joell Ortiz (see what I did there?), Stat Quo or Raekwon.

Now that Rihanna is newly single, the dating rumors have started up again, linking her once more to Drake. But despite his admiration for the pop superstar, the Young Money rapper maintains the two are not an item.
Drizzy denies he is dating RiRi, who split from boyfriend Matt Kemp late last year. “Me and Rihanna have a great connection, but no, we’re not together,” he told BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Tim Westwood during his U.K. tour.
While he shared a brief romance with his “What’s My Name?” collaborator in 2009, their relationship remains platonic. “I care for her very much. She’s a great person,” he said.
The 24-year-old bachelor is in no rush to get into a relationship. “We’re young, young kids. Just living life. That’s it. I want to have some stories to tell the kids,” he joked.
Always the gentleman, Drake showered praise on RiRi, who helped him score his first-ever No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. “I think she sets a certain precedent as far as fashion, as far as all the things women care about—hair, the way you carry yourself, and obviously the music. I think it’s important.”
